Default Is this normal?

I have had Rocky for around 1 month now.
He is a 4 month old black bear syrian hamster.

My problem:
Whenever I pick him up in my hands he tries to jump off and run away.
Once, I was holding him and he actually jumped out of my hands and fell 1 foot down onto the floor. I do not know why he is doing this!

Also since I have the ovo cage, when I try to pick him up he dashes into a tube. I have to act quickly to pet him, feed him treats and pick him up.

Any solutions? He hates me.. I know it. Should I take him back and get a new hammy?

the only thing i would be taking back is the ovo cage.. unless you plan to attach it to a bin cage to offer some more space. the tubes are a problem with any cage as they use their natural instincts to hide.. rocky is doing great coming near you with a bribe of a treat id maybe coax him into a ball and alot of people recommend you go sit in the dry bath with them and let them roam around you/smell etc it is meant to be a popular method of taming or if this doesnt suit you put him in a large box. he certainly wont hate you some hamsters just take longer to tame (and such a great credit and reward to the owner when they are tame) on a serious note id seriously consider a cage change good luck.. stay postive and dont give up on the lil guy

cages with tubes really can make taming difficult!
Could you possibly move him into a storage bin cage until hes a bit tamer?

If not then its best to use a ball or box of some kind to transport him into a playpen/play box or the bathtub for taming.
This way even if he jumps out of your hands as long as you holding him reasonably low down he'll just go back into playpen/play box or bathtub.

baby hamsters are normally jumpy, i'm pretty certain whichever hamster you chose they would be the same
