There is no breeders around me and I cant travel out of state to get a some from breeders. I was wondering how hard it would be to start with some pet store quality hamsters and get to a nice genetic background? I wont be doing this but I was just curious!:D

Have you tried your local humane society? I got my hammy from the Humane Society of Broward County. You may also find one on Petfinder.

I have looked. I live in South Dakota so finding a rescue anything on the internet or at a actual rescue is pretty difficult... I personally want to start my own line but getting from breeders is pretty difficult since most breeders are on the coast.

Hello!
Did you mean you wanted to start breeding hamsters yourself from pet store hamsters? From what I have previously heard and depending on where you are from, a lot of pet store hamsters have at some point been interbred and may have a few genetic issues, often coming from large breeding mills, which is why it can take a lot of research, preparation and knowledge to start breeding your own hamsters and I think breeding from pet store bought hamsters would not be a good idea.
Most reputable breeders will know the many generations of the hamsters they are breeding, including temperament and genetic issues of the generations, but with pet store hamsters that just isn't possible.

Hope this helps!
Alice
