Hi, we have two Syrian hamsters. Flash who belongs to my 11 year old. He is a gorgeous boy and he's 9 months old. We adopted him from the well known pet shop when he's 15 weeks old. We managed to tame him quite quickly. My 10 year old was desperate for a hamster so on Sunday while getting supply's from pet shop she begged us for her own hamster. She like her sibling paid for the hamster and cage with Christmas /birthday money. So we now have Quinn (it was caramel until on the journey home she managed to bite through the first box and nearly made her escape through second box so changed to (harley) Quinn) she is 8 weeks old and very screechy and quick. We are taking little steps with her as she's tiny and nervy but she is very nosey! Now after doing lots of research about female hamsters I have began to worry that it will have an effect on Flash. They are in seperate cages and in our utility room with a large sink and draining board between them. I've just checked on them and Flash made a weird noise like grinding teeth/gurgly belly he was very alert and came up to me when I went close. Is he ok or just sensing Quinn. Will it change his gorgeous personality?? Excuse typos and spelling I'm on my phone

When I had females and a male at the same time my male was more energetic than normal when the females were in heat, but still friendly and tame.

Keep and eye on how yours reacts and make sure the cage is secure as my laid back male became intent on escaping. He didn't manage it though.

Your male will likely become more interested in getting out the cage to go a courting as CMB mentions. It will cause him some unrest for a bit but they do tend to get used to the smell of the other hamster and settle down. Take care with the new one though and hand washing etc as really a newby needs quarantined for a couple of weeks away from the other hamster just in case they have brought anything in with them. Wash hands really well and maybe wear an apron to handle newbie at the very least.

I agree with the above answers, males that are in houses with females, tend to become more rambunctious and determined to get at the females, especially when they're in heat. Like suggested above, make 100% sure your lid is secure, otherwise you can end up with an accidental litter! Make and female hams can be kept in the same house just fine, but if you're really worried, separating them into different rooms can help make communication between them harder

Thank you for replying. I'm very particular about making sure that we clan our hands after touching the hamsters before touching the other.
I have anothe question. Quinn is very inquisitive and will come and sniff, let me gently stroke her and come up to the bars when we talk to her. She is also screeching on and off but is very calm??? What is going on? She doesn't do it when I stroke her.

She is likely trying to get a message across to him, whether it be that she is looking to mate, or that she feels her territory has been invaded. Is this noise new? If so, it should dissipate after a few weeks or so

(The quote portion of this looks sort of odd, I'm not sure why or how to fix it so sorry about that)
