Hello everybody,

Last week I got my first Syrian since... many many years.
I ran into her at the petshop.
I left but found it really really hard to leave her behind.
After a night of tossing and turning, I decided to go get her.

She is a silvergrey longhaired Syrian.

She was a bit sick the first few days. Some sneezing and a teary eye. It was possible that stress and a cold got a chance. She was just one day at the petshop before I got her, and then she went home with me. I have had contact with the petshop and made some agreements about how to proceed.

After a few days, she got better, her eye is clean, and the sneezing is as good as gone so that is really a blessing for her and me.

At the moment she is in quarantine, that means I keep her in a somewhat smaller tank and keep tabs on her health and condition. She will remain that way for a little while, untill I am absolutely sure she is completely recuperated and then I will decide on a new enclosure.
So keep in mind this is a temporary enclosure.

Today I got her a appropriate sized wheel and she loves the new toy very much, she has a nice hide, a potty in the corner which she (happily) uses very well and it really helps keeping things nice and clean.

When I got her out of the store tank she was very feisty and decided on biting me untill she drew blood. Later at home she bit me again  but all is forgiven. After a few days in peace, she got more relaxed and now is more comfortable with handling. She climbs on my hand and takes treats.
I am really happy that she is open to taming and doing so incredibly well and she is really really sweet.

Here are some photo's from the petshop and when she got home.
Take care,

Joey

Thank you:) Well she has been some improvements, she was resting a lot I guess the stress was a little bit much for her. But since I have given her a wheel, she is out more and loves to run.

I was absolutely obsessed with a few color schemes I saw online.
I just love the silver and black , and I saw that face pressed up on to the glass. And I spent all night and day thinking about her.
Let's just say I won't allow myself into another pet store without supervision lolzzzzz

She's really beautiful & looks adorable curled up in your arm, congrats :)

Thank you:) I loved it too, she was very shy and decided the nook in my arm was a nice viewing post and she keeps on crawling back there when she gets the chance. But she's much easier now to handle then a few days ago, and I have good hopes for the future :)

New video of Misty and Sharky in their hamster balls, they can go about the room during cleaning time.

I am currently negotiating with someone about a new bigger tank for her, it's 80x30x50 , and it has 2 storeys, it looks great I hope I can get it for her, lot's of room for bedding, climbing opportunities, so I have high hopes haha.

Yes, I sure am, I hope she is happy :) it's getting time for a bigger cage though she has grown so much, and tries to escape sometimes. Luckily I am planning on getting her a new cage next friday if everything goes well :)

80 x 30 is a bit small for a Syrian.Keep in mind levels don't count in overall floor space.Something like the Alaska or a large Samla bin would be a much better choice, and these are fairly affordable if she does end up needing more space and you can actually expand a Samla or any bin as well!

80 x 30 isn't that far off from the recommended size of 80 x 50. I wouldn't worry about a few cm, it's how you arrange the cage that matters.

Thank you so much. But wire cages are not an option with my cat.
Bin cages aren't a viable option for me here. I have tried it and can't make it work in my living room.
I don't know why levels don't count but I have to make a choice.
Leave her in a 60x30x30 for a longer time and risk her escaping.

Or purchase a safe and secure terrarium build especially for rodents.
This one is affordable and the first one in months I can afford. And I have been searching so very long.

I've set up an appointment to go and get it. So I hope you'll trust me in doing the best I can for her within my limits. :)

Thank you very much.
I see it that way too.
She will get lots of bedding no over crowding the cage but lots of things to do and she will be safe. That is my main priority. Also I have to take finances in consideration. I can place fun things for her to crawl through on the top ledge and and clear the water and food dishes from the main floor to safe space. She will get all of her current things back and extra to boot.

Believe me I have no other options here and I'm trying very hard to do the best I can.
I am a bit out of time and options here. And this looks like a great setup, I can tweak and make t to suit her needs as best as possible.

I think it sounds fine to me, like T-Liz said - better to have a few less cm's and a good set up. Like you, I prefer to have tank styles as we have cats. The cats don't go in the hamster room as I keep the door shut but once in a while they find a way. The only Downside is they tend to cost more Than the similar size options of wire cages but for my circumstances, that's a better trade off. But with a bit of creativity you can make a lovely setup with the upside of deep substrate for burrowing.

I know that issue. I live in an apartment, have everything on 1 floor, and my cat needs his space as well. I don't have a separate room for the animals, and my cat can get in every room. That's why I have to invest in something like this.

A wire cage is too great a risk, my cat is inventive and a big hunter, I love him with everything, and of course he may not have a chance to get to the hamsters. So I need something safe and secure.

A glass enclosure this size custom made is not something I can afford easily, but this secondhand tank came along and the lady was so kind to hold it aside for me. Friday I can go and get it, and I will be happy to finally offer her more space. I can't stuff the tank of course but I can put in a big nice layer of mini-hemp and be creative with the ledge upper level.

Here is a pic of the ad so you can see you can do a lot of things with it.

http://i.marktplaats.com/00/s/MzczWDQ0MQ==/z/xq4AAOSwImRYLGBX/$_84.JPG

The wheel wil be taken out of course and will go to my Robo who's wheel I broke per accident :S. You can see it can hold a big layer of bedding, it has a top shelf on which I can place nice tunnels and play stuff. And it has a nice place to put the food and drink dish, so they too won't take up more space on the main level :D I personally am very enthousiastic about it, and look forward to making it a nice home. And seeing her do her thing, I have a nice little wooden spare house lined up for the cage and she can have a lot of fun.
Hope everything goes well, I'll keep you guys posted.

Well... I had a busy busy day.. drove all the way to the place to get it.
And it's very nice! Misty already discovered how to open the vent roster which is slide able haha she is soooo smart!!! Had to secure that! She has been digging and digging and digging, I have put in a lot of bedding wanted to do more but the wheel would't fit in so had to make due. It's sooo much easier getting to her from the front, and interacting with her. She travels the ledge often and has dared to go up the ladder.

Here are some funny pics I took, and some of the enclosure:

Awww look at you proud hamdad! !

I love the first and third photos. She's really cute. I love grey syrians , I think they're one of my favourites.

I'm sure she's going to enjoy her new cage.

I have the same house (or at least it looks the same). Diy tip: if you want, you can easily remove the roof (it's nailed to the bottom) and then glue the pieces together with Elmers glue, so that way you have a removable roof and you don't need to completely destroy her nest every time you need to check her nest.

Lol thank you :)

Good tip but I don't tend to bother her in her nest, I clean it out every three weeks and she gets all new bedding and nesting material. With just a fluff of the old one.

She has been exploring, she has been testing the enclosure like a velociraptor for weaknesses lol. I had to make some adjustments. I had to place the house closer to the bottom, because she has been gnawing at the glass corner and it was driving me mad at night. She has been gnawing at almost everything, and I am glad she made me pay attention to some stuff that needed improvement.

On the bright side the house is now half buried in the mini hemp, she can burrow down and bunker up like she did in the beginning. A lot is also acclimatizing to everything I think, she has been very active and exploring the whole cage.
