The mesh hasn't come for my zoozone 2 yet but I plan to move in a new resident tomorrow!

Will a syrian be ok with no mesh on the lid for a few days if there are no high toys etc.?

A Syrian should be ok for a few days without the mesh added. Especially if it is a young hamster or small hamster. Until the top is meshed have less substrate and low toys or hanging toys.

Watch it and see if it can access the bars. You could put something in to allow it to reach the bars while you are watching. It will probably climb up and try to escape. You will then know if it can fit through the bars. If the bars are removable, you could take them off and put them in the cage and put a treat/food the other side and see if the hamster can get through.

It should be fine, yes. If the Syrian is an adult, just be sure S/he can`t climb up into anything for a few days until you can take the grill off and mesh it. I use a Gabber Rex tank similar to the ZZ1 in size for a single dwarf hamster and I`ve never had the lid on for the duration of the time I`ve had three different dwarf hamsters living in it at separate times. No issues at all, although I appreciate Syrians can be bigger and some can be cheeky if they know they have no lid! Hope you get on okay. x

Thank you both! She will be a young syrian so not fully grown, Will keep an eye on her and try do what you suggest CMB with the bars!

I wouldn't risk it if I were you- they can squeeze through smaller spaces than you think, and even if there are no high toys they will find a way to climb up! you could always place the cage inside something else that they can't climb out of (e.g. the bath) if you have to move them in before meshing the lid.

I'd put the cage in the bath as Leedsgurl suggested. They can be awfully clever little things. When I first got my syrian Spike he broke out of his temporary bin cage 3 times before his proper cage arrived and I would have sworn blind there was no way for him to get out! Better safe than sorry with this one I think.
