hi
i have been thinking for a while about getting a pair of dwarfs. im not sure which as i love the look of robo's but prefer the idea that winter whites can be handled more. also i havent ruled out campbells. not keen on the chinese. what i need to know is what is the best cage to buy for a pair of dwarfs? and also is there any big ones which dont need extra mesh putting over the top bars as i dont like the look of that realy. my budget is flexible for the right cage and also space is not a huge problem. ive looked at the zoo zone 2 which needs extra mesh on it . is there anything simular with smaller bar gaps?
next thing is which is the best to get. what is the difference between the campbells and the winter whites? i know the colour difference, i mean temperment wise.
also i love the cute look of the robo's but are they really lots faster than the other dwarfs? i would like to be able to handle them a bit.
thanks x

hi
ive been looking on the internet today and have found a ferplast duna multy. the bar spacing is less than 1cm. would that keep a dwarf in? its perfect in every other way so if it would keep them in i would get thwt cage for a pair of dwarfs! x

unless you're going to a show breeder, you won't get the option of choosing between WW and campbells, as they will be hybrids. Yes, robos are WAY faster than the others and if you want to cuddle your hams, i wouldn't go for robos. They aren't really cuddly.
The best cage is the kind of thing you've been looking at - a large plastic style cage such as the gabber rex, zoozone etc. If you don't put tall toys (which you can't have anyway with a pair of dwarfs) you don't need the bars on the roof. I have dwarfs in gabbers without bars. They don't even try to get out and couldn't if they did try (without the shelf).

i didn't see this, you must've posted at the same time as me! Yeah, if you're getting WW or campbells it will be fine. I wouldn't put a robo in a bar cage though as i've had 2 escapes myself, although others have been ok. I just don't risk it here.

hi,
thanks for the reply bunsey. the ferplast duna multy is the same shape as the zoo zone and gabber. the bars are on the roof opening. interesting that they wouldnt be able to get out if they cant reach the top but unfortunatly for my hams i have a lovely big ginger tom cat called sunny and although he has never bothered my hams before i think i would be pushing my trust in him to leave the lid off!
i love the robo's cute looks but think maybe i would be better off getting a pair of russians so i can handle them more. do you think even if it says 'winter whites' or 'campbells' on the label in the pet shop they would still possibly be hybreds? xx

yes, they'd still be hybrids... just maybe a greater % of WW or campbell, if you see what i mean... like the hybrid cross was further back in the line or something

I get the impression its best to go to a breeder to be sure that its pure ww or campbells. But i live in Czech Republic and i tried the pet shop first. They kept c. and ww away from each other so i guess they knew the difference and here ww are more popular than c (and WW are called djungarian, LOL..total opposite of US and GB).
Anyway, my dwarf was a little biting thing and it took me 1.5 month to tame him with a glove:D. They can be slow, they can be super fast, i always keep a paper toilet roll tube to catch him if he decides to run for freedom:D.
I have a cage and its 1cm/bars, when he came home he was already 2months old, and he cant get out:).
He just loves paper tissues and making nests all around, and is so sweet in his chinchilla sand:D. Pees in one corner behind the wheel, lol:D.
Anyway he is really sweet but not extra cuddly, he is still young maybe thats it:D. The worst thing about dwarfs is that they dont live long and i appreciate every day with him!

Buying from a breeder and not a pet shop would ensure tame hamsters. Even if the pet shop has them labeled one way or another, the cross breeding is rampant with the mass breeders that supply the pet shops, you are nearly guaranteed a hybrid because at some point it's likely been crossed (previous generations).
The Duna Multy would make a great cage for a pair of dwarfs. And yes, you might want to mesh the top if you have that big kitty and end up with Robo's, though it'd probably be okay with high toys. Robo's are excellent jumpers though, lol

hi,
thankyou for the replys. i have searched the web for possible cages for a pair of dwarfs and this is the best one i can find. at least if the bars are 1cm sunny wont be able to get his paws in and it sounds like they wont be getting out either.
i havent ruled out for definate robo's but i think the ww or campbells would suit me better. i would love to go to a breeder instead of a pet shop but theres not any breeders anywhere near north oxfordshire and i cant drive :(.
we have 3 pet shops in town and two sell dwarf hammys. pets at home and a small in town pet shop. the third only sells syrians and they are by far the best pet shop in town.
i have time now to do my reaserch as im definatly not getting another untill my poorly edgar is safely in rainbow bridge and ive had time to cope with that. hopefully he is not going there this week though as he seems to have bounced back a little? x

Hi,
I don't know if this happens with hamsters but often with rats they can do a 'rat train' so that you can get your rat from a breeder further away by people helping to transport them (say if they're going to shows etc).
Does this happen with hamsters? In which case you could try to find a breeder who's willing to organise a way of getting the hammies part way to you...
