View Full Version : Sand bath problems...

I have been using a Tupperware box as a sand bath for Dolly for a while now.
It's a perfect size for her and she enjoys using it.
However, she has the tendency to kick the sand out (it gets everywhere!) and also, loads of her bedding (Fitch) gets in there as I use quite a lot of substrate.
My question is, are there any Syrian sized sand baths on the market that are covered with just an entry hole?
Or does anyone know of a homemade hack I could make?
Thanks guys!
This is her current "bath"...

We use these (and the morrisons version we can't get anymore) with the lids left off for a fair few hams and they work really well :)
FÖRVAR Jar with lid - IKEA (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00030262/) (Be warned that Dina the duprasi also has one and she is an expert at emptying her sand bath so they are still easily emptied, but its less likely to happen by accident)

My little hairball is exactly the same. Just loves flinging the sand out of the sandpit..and his cage. XD

I found Corner Toilet With Hood (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corner-toilet-hood-hamster-14/dp/B000V9IVME/ref=pd_sim_petsupplies_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=16M4MT9R876QK0JY2GND) on Amazon, but it is rather small. You may be better off getting a large glass jar and putting it on its side, or something like this (http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/empty-cookie-jar-10752556.jpg) (found a hammy using one (https://31.media.tumblr.com/a4435e932ec7eec1a320507dcc1bcfd1/tumblr_inline_ni8pduhZhq1t0e8f4.png)).

Edit: Woo, ninja'd!

I use a fairly large glass biscuit jar. The ones with the one flat side so it sits tilted upwards. I got it cheaply in a discount kitchen supplies place. I pinched the idea from Willow the Wisp on here :) I have it tilted quite high up but with enough substrate under the opening she can get in fine. She still kicks the sand out but it stops too much getting in. And it's easy to clean.

Nat - you can get a jar like the one Velma has at Asda but, I'd also try the pound shops cause they had big jars like that also.
Dolly looks so cute as usual!

Thanks guys, I'll have a look around for an appropriately sized jar!

I use a plastic travel tank for Rupert's sand bath/digging box. It has nice deep sides so he doesn't kick the sand everywhere and I can fill it to a nice depth :)

You can use a hamster toilet, the sand wont get everywhere because it has sides to protect sand getting kicked out everywhere. I use it for Snow and it works good. :)

http://www.hybriddesign.net/sandjar2.jpgWe have a sand jar also. It's great because of the opening being at an angle the sand doesn't get out when he digs or kicks around. He doesn't have any trouble getting in or out because of the easy angle also and we put a little wood bridge at the entrance. You can find them at any sort of craft store like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. We got ours at Hobby Lobby for only $3.50!
