View Full Version : My hamster loves conkers - but are they safe for her to eat?

My hamster discovered some conkers that my son had collected from the horse chestnut tree. She was so energised by this discovery and put two in her pouches and collected three more to store in a corner in the living room. She has since eaten one and loves them. There doesn't seem to be any health harm. Please could you let me know that she's okay.
Conkers are the large seeds or nuts from a horse chestnut tree.
Many thanks.

My hamster book said they are poisonous to hamsters.

My hamster books all say never give horse chestnuts to hamsters too.

However my hamsters absolutely adore normal chestnuts that humans eat - either roasted or raw! But just to be clear, these are not the same as horse chestnuts :)

I agree you should not give the horse chestnut conkers. Hope fully she will be OK on the one but hamsters can only have the 'sweet chestnuts' that are sold for human consumption which are different from the horse chestnuts.
