Hey guys,
I have 4 Dwarf Campbells Russian hamsters and was wondering do you think feeding your dwarfs "normal" hamster food is ok?

Im currently giving my hams Harry Hamster food after switching from Pets @ Home food. But ive heard there is special dwarf hamster food out there and was wondering whether i should switch? And where i'd buy it if so? And what you guys think of it if you've usd it? Im a bit muddled! :? Comments much appreciated :)

We feed our dwarves Harry too supplemented with our own small seed mix.
There is a german company which produces a dwarf mix which we have tried. We have tried it personally. I know many people do like this food however we find our do just as well on Harry and Bunny is very expensive and has to be mail ordered. It is a personal choice what you feed and some people like one food and some others.
Here is a link to the Bunny Dwarf food

I just started feeding mine Supreme Hazel Hamster Diet. The rescue where I am adopting my next hamster recommends this food because it does not contain molasses since dwarfs can have diabetes.

I currently feed my dwarfie on Pets At Home hamster mix, and mix in about two big pinches of Trill bird seed mix which he goes crazy for. I break up the large biscuits/squashed peas and corn and any large bits of dried banana now because I find he tends to eat them in his toilet/sandbath and then drop them and leave them there...

I have also seen another dwarf mix in my local pet shop but can't remember the name. Haven't tried this one though.

I've just switched this morning from feeding my Campbells Dwarf the Pets @ Home hamster muesli to Beaphar Xtra Vistal Dwarf Hamster food. Am hoping it's going to be a better mix as it's specifically for Dwarf Hamsters where as the Pets @ Home contained too many fruit and sweet elements I felt.

The only thing that worries me about my new mix is that it states 'contains meat and animal derivatives'. Is this something to be worried about?? Am I feeding my little pet horse, dog, cat and who knows what else meat instead of the turkey it states on the front of the pack??

Have provided a link for those interested in the mix:

I feed my little Dwarf Harry Hamster mix. i seem to have a very fussy hamster. When we fill his bowl back up he literally sits himself in the bowl and will scrabble around and throw the little bits he doesnt like out, and pouch the ones he does like, funny to watch tho. im really careful about what i feed him aswell, cause i know dwarfs are prone to diabetes so i dont give him any dried/fresh fruit at all and theres alot of vegetables that ive been told are bad for them, do u think maybe im going a little overboard??

I currently feed Sun Seed Sunthing Special Hamster Mix. I pick out all the sunflower seeds (save them in an extra container as treats for Olive). I also pick out all the corn.

I do include foods from here:
http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41940

I made that list as a reference for those of us dwarf owners who have a hard time figuring out what is safe for our little guys!

Same as me Lilly its brilliant. Only trouble the pet shop near me that has it in stock has a few bags & that goes out of date in August. So I tried to order it on thepetexpress & they sent me the syrian version .

I phoned them up & they said its out of stock & I have to send back the food. So a big waste of timethat was

I will have to try the local pet shop again.

i've tried giving Pepper (our hammy) all of that, he turned his nose up at dried meal worms, wasn't interested at all. maybe its cause we adopted him, he had a previous family and got used to different type of foods there, i couldn't see a hectic family taking many precautions with him and his food. he loves seeds and nuts as well. maybe someone could recommend something different?? ooo thanks Urchin, much help :)

I've started giving 'Beaphar Xtra Vital Dwarf Hamster Food 500g to my little 'Princess'. She seems to like most of it except the mealworms...she just won't eat them.
I usually pick out the peas and sweetcorn before hand as she's a RC and save the sunflower seeds for treats.

I also give her a little bit of cucumber every few days which see loves and will eat from my hand.

I've only had her 3 weeks so am tredding carefully as to what I feed her :)

My four get a mix of mostly Harry Ham, with a few cat bix, some Trill bird seed, dry lentals and either some sugar free puffed rice or some other sugar free cerial. They did have some dry pasta shapes mixed in too for their teeth, but they weren't touching them and I think they were too hard for them X ) So I've taken them out.
As for thier tea, they get all sorts. Everyone does. They love chicken, and cooked pasta always goes down well. They love cooked rice, they get all excited over it X ) Tuna, carrot, curly kale... They like all sorts. And, I was very happy to see a pack of Good Boy sugar free choc drops the other day at the pet shop. They're going down a real treat!
I've still yet to get some meal worms for them to try though... I'm worried I'll make them fat! But I will get some for them, give them one to try ever so often.

John's Gizmo & Pip, & my Huxley eat Beaphar Xtra Vital Dwarf Hamster Food. We just recently changed to it & they all love it. :) I order it from Equinefelinecanine. Besides this they eat very small portions of fruit & veg a couple of times a week & cereal, bread, pasta etc.. Gizmo loves porridge, he gets about a 1/4 teaspoon!

Hope, here is a link to where I buy it.

XtraVital Dwarf Hamster Food Beaphar - 500g : www.EquineCanineFeline.com the place to buy all your Pet Products, Horse Products and Pet Supplies online (http://www.equinecaninefeline.com/catalog/xtravital-dwarf-hamster-food-beaphar-500g-p-1716.html)

It's £2.49 for a 500g bag. I don't think it is too expensive but I suppose since the bag is smaller than regular hamster food bags it works out more. I find though, I don't waste any as they love it so much. :)
