As I took the inspiration and guidance from posts and links on Hamster Central, I thought I should post the finished creation.

We decided early on that we wanted a bin cage, to give our ham as much room as possible. When making it, my priorities were to make it hamster friendly and safe, and also hamster proof. I also wanted it to look a bit more polished than if it was just thrown together. I have to add I am a DIY novice, and learnt as I went along. Mrs Neg asked for a blue and black theme.

The house is made from 2 'really useful' boxes, joined with drainpipe, the top section has a wire mesh lid edged with gaffa tape, and attached with heavy duty velcro. It has a wodent wheel (fantastic!) attached with cable ties. There is a cut-out for the wheel as it was too tall, and Mrs Neg made me cover this as she was paranoid Chib would scale the wheel and get out of the 2mm gap  this was covered with another 'really useful' box lid. I removed one of the sides of the box and replaced it with perspex/plexiglass so we could get a better view of her.

The drainpipe has a wooden ladder to help her get up and down, to start with we had a cardboard tube in the pipe, but she didn't need it. We did have a superpet bottle but it had a leak so it was replaced with a Ferplast bottle which is much better made. Chibby has megazorb and safebed and uses an old jar with potty litter for a toilet.

to start with we had playhouse/cabin in the bottom section but she moved into it and was sleeping right by where she was going to the toilet and keeping her food in there too, we think she picked the smallest space to nest as she was just nervous of moving in, at first cleanout we removed it, and she is going to have it back soon now she is toilet trained, to see if she fairs any better.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I really want to add another level, but Mrs Neg says Chib has enough room, and it would be getting a handful to clean.

Maybe I will just do it! that's sometimes the easiest way. :D

That cage is made to perfection! :D :D

But how do you get access to Chib on the bottom section?

Thanks!

It just unclips and lifts off, the tube that joins the sections twists apart so it can sit flat.

We don't really need to go in that part apart form the once a week clean out, Chib always comes up to the top to see what is going on if you call her.

Working on version 2 at the moment, to give her a bit more space and make it safer for when she is doing her spider-ham antics.

I would love to make them as they look beautiful! But i wont be allowed as i only recently bought a £30 cage. Not that much for some hamster crazy people. But my family think thats enough for a hamster. I on the other hand ¬¬ It really looks amazing! Is it easy to clean out? When this cages gets worn out, i'd love to make one of those ;D

This is mine (for tiny roborovski hamsters):

This shows how I attached the wheel to the wooden "tables" (shelves):

And how I attached the water bottle after much annoyance with the "sippy" bottles

I think your cage looks really good Berkana, I like the way you made it into two levels with the shelves and your two robos are so cute

Your bin looks like the one I'm going to be getting for my hamster too :p

Thanks :) It was kind of thrown together quickly as I agreed to adopt them from someone who bought 4 "females" n ended up with 20! (one was apparently male!). I already had a dwarf hammy cage which my rescued syrian came in, so thought I'd use that but changed my mind lol. The bin I used is an 80l one - from Wilkinsons. Think they're on sale at the mo for £5 as they're getting some new ones in :)
