I think I might have a bug - I got my first little dwarf hybrid (which I mistakenly put in the Campbells section as that's what I was told she was) on 5th of July , and on the 28th of July I ended up adopting her brother from the P@H adoption centre!! I'm a little bit smitten :)

So, Remington was put in the adoption centre because of his "personality problems" - he was always on the go, always trying to bite. They named him Nibbles because it was the only polite thing they could name him :( Turns out, he was biting because he was terrified - he's completely deaf and seems to be totally blind as well. He was a little nippy at first but has really settled down now and seems to respond to me tapping his cage to let him know I'm around and as long as I don't move too quickly he runs about quite happily :) He loves his snuggles :) He is also Bluebell, my little hybrid girl's brother :)

The day he arrived:

My evil bitey boy ;)

Awww! What a gem! :D Does it hurt when he bites?

Absolutely  He nicked my skin the first few days he was here but now that I know to take care approaching him and letting him know I'm there I get those lovely little kisses instead :D I wish all my animals were as "evil" as the staff at P@H said Remi was!!

A BIG welcome to Remi! :) He`s a little special lad who will now have a decent life. It`s no wonder these little hamsters start to nip and defend themselves when they are kept in small glass tanks with no stimulation and being disturbed by everything and everyone passing by in the store. :( He won`t know what to do with himself now, that`s for sure!

Aw the poor little fluff. :( I have a little hybrid that we adopted from P@H. He was put in the adoption section because he only has three legs, and he used to bite all the time because he never had enough room to get about (he can't climb over obstacles) and because he was so roughly handled. He was terrified at first.

I'm so glad little Remi found you and now has the caring home he deserves. Also, he is so cute! :3

Thanks everyone!! He is handsome and he knows it :D He really loves being handled too  I'm taking my time with him, he gets really scared easily - and his response to being scared is to stick his teeth in whatever came at him (as I discovered when I gave him a salt lick yesterday!)

Munchalot, it sounds like your poor little hybrid had it a lot worse than Remi :( I hope he is doing ok now :) I'm a sucker for unwanted and special animals - unfortunately it also means losing a lot of them before their time :( I have had a lot of mice in the last few years, and many of them were unwanted pets or rescues. It just makes having them alot more special doesn't it? :)

I am so happy he found you. Special pets need special people, that's for sure. A question though...how did you find out he's deaf and blind?

He's come on in leaps and bounds since we got him. Hopefully little Remi will continue to grow in confidence and learn to be happy and content in his new home. :D
They are indeed special. :) Knowing you have changed an animal's life for the better is so rewarding. Watching them develop and grow in character, seeing them come out of their shell, is really lovely. I've got that right now with my little Fin. He's a syrian I picked up a couple weeks ago. He had been in a shop for a while and nobody seemed to want him, and he is so shy and nervous, but he's growing in confidence every day and is really turning out to be a lovely little character. :)

Thank you :D
As for how I found out his problems, I had dropped something near his cage, it made that much noise that all my mice, the cat and Bluebell came running to their cage bars to see what was going on (well clearly the cat didn't come running to his cage bars!! ) When i got up I noticed that Remi was still in his bowl eating, so I tried clapping above his head and whistled and he didn't let on either. I left it a while and tried again later (even tried snapping my fingers, and making a sharp sucking sound as I know some animals register some sound but not others) but he really doesn't respond to any sound, no matter how low or sharp or loud it is. As for his blindess, he is out almost all day and part of the night (his sister comes out when it's dark, and so did my last hamster - I don't think hamsters are crepuscular like mice?), and bumps into things a lot if it is new in his cage, when he bumps into something new he looks completely startled and attacks it, and he also seems wary if I move something that was already in his cage (you should have seen the carry on when I cleared some bedding out a corner to put in a sand bath, he jumped up when he bumped into the bowl and then upended it with his attack.) ANd when I first brought him home he ran into the sides of his cage more than once! So going on that I am assuming he is both deaf and blind - he certainly acts the same way my deaf and blind mice do although that's normally through old age that they become that way. If there is a better way of testing I'd be keen to know, but he certainly seems to be (again though I am going on my experience of elderly mice and how they cope with these problems and how I test them so I hope i haven't made a mistake :( he's only my third hamster, and the second one, his sister has only been here for a month!)

He's come on in leaps and bounds since we got him. Hopefully little Remi will continue to grow in confidence and learn to be happy and content in his new home. :D

I really love having special animals, but I find it really hard to turn one away even when i know I have no space  I'm like you, I love watching them come out of their shells, even when they don't want to b handled :)

Remi is going to be one special little lad and sounds as though he can tackle anything! He soon lets things know if they are in his way!
