View Full Version : Knitted or crochet hamsters?

Since there seems to be so many talented members on here who love to knit, sew or crochet, I wondered if anyone would be good at knitting a small ball shape that would resemble a robo and sew on black beaded eyes and felt the paws and ears?!!!! I`m rather useless at anything involving knits or crochet myself, but I know some members have crafted hamsters and other animals from Fimo clay, so wondered if knitted/crochet dwarf hamsters might be the new `thing` to do? :) I can just imagine having a little knitted robo sitting on my laptop!

Anyone inventive enough to give it a go? I would but I would probably end up with a mess full of holes!

I posted this on the Ravelry hamsters group. :D

I`d love to give knitting one a go but I wouldn`t know where to start! It`s probably easy enough for someone who knows how to knit a ball shape and maybe knits dolls or other such things as a hobby.

Found this! This would resemble a robo but the body shape would need to be rounder!

Simple but not so simple for someone who doesn`t knit!

I'll try and do you a robo RH but it will be about a month because I have some other things to cover first and will be on holiday too :)
What colour would you like? I cant really do agouti patterns so it would need to be sort of fairly one colour though I can embroider some bits!

I have a similar little hamster made by a lady who sells them at Southern Hamster Club shows. She's even made me a dom spot hamster finger puppet!

I'll have to have a go at making one like Little Nico, All white should be easy enough!! I'm not nearly good enough to do different colours for Pixel and Inch!

Sorry for the late reply everyone I was out this morning. soufflé, I didn`t know you were talented with the knitting needles! I love that little bean shaped knitted hamster shown in green in the link, although a robo would be more of a round ball shape! A plain light-ish brown one more like a robo would be good! Especially if it has the small black button eyes, the pale feet, ears and tail and if possible, the little eyebrows!

I was in a charity shop this morning and payed 20p for a Burger King toy plastic hamster I found in the kiddies toy section. It zooms forward when you twist the disc under it`s belly and it resembles a golden hamster in colour so I was well chuffed! Here is a blue one but mine is light brown. Mine doesn`t have the car though!

I`d love you to have a go at a robo soufflé and see how it turns out. My wee Rocky (in my avatar image) was a white faced robo, but I`m not sure how easy that would be to knit?

You must have thought I had forgotten your robo RH but I have had a go today and it does look better in real life that in the pics. I was quite pleased with this as I made the pattern up myself. Please PM me your address.

I LOVE him soufflé and have sent you my details. :) I will cherish him and sit him on my laptop. x You and some of the other talented members should have a go at creating various hamster species in in knitted form and sell them because I think they would go down a storm, especially with Christmas coming up! They could even be made into keyrings?

I'd buy a knitted keyring hamster!

Does anyone remember those hamster toys that had a pull cord out of the back and it made them vibrate? When I was a child we had them at school and had pretend hamster races with them :)

Pophammy suggested that we set up a site too. The only thing is they take quite some time to produce and I have some arthitis is my fingers so I can't knit for too long. I don't think I could make them quick enough. Each part is knitted separately so for the robo - Body, 4 feet, tail, 2 ears, 2 eyebrows = 10 pieces then all sewn together and embroidered with custom details which the person asks for. Probably took an hour and a half which would speed up as I know what to do now however I doubt anyone would pay the true cost of actually making them in time and effort. I also have a lot of other things going on in life and moderating as well as boring work, looking after family. dogs etc so time is scarce. I like making them specially as presents for special people so they are unique ;) Sometimes somebody does something really nice or I feel just needs one and I decide to do one :)
The syrians and chinese take much longer as they are larger and have more knitting and detailing especially if they are dressed say for a wedding or baby!
I can see the robos would make nice Chrismas tree deocorations actually - better start one for Pophammy's stocking ;) She wanted to keep that one but she has all the prototypes so will have a different one from RH's robo.
Thank you for the kind comments though - I do appreciate them. If I do have any to sell I will put them on market place!

LOL. Any and all patterns are welcome :-) When the weather starts getting cooler and the days get shorter, that's when I do more crocheting and knitting. I just, yesterday, ordered 9 skeins of yarn for 4 hats for 2 of my friends. I figured I'd start them this week so they would have them before the weather got cold. So, crafty stuff has been on my mind. Today I'll try the bean hammy, and if you send me your pattern, I'll do that too. See how they both come out.:D

Cute, isn`t he?! :) His coat is a little dark though. The colour you used soufflé, the lighter tan, is better suited to a white faced robo than the dark chocolate in the image. Look at my Avatar as Rocky is a good example!

I'm going to try the Realistic one first, but with a mohair yarn so it looks like a LH hammy. Also, I think I'm going to alter the face a bit. Hammies don't have squared off noses...and I think I'll move the nose up higher and give the poor ham a mouth! :-)

I would like your whiteface ham pattern though, Souffle, I really do like it. :-)
