Hi all,

I was googling harry hamster mix, and came across a warning on another hamster website.

"there was an ingredient change when the packaging changed on Hazel/Harry Hamster food. The new formula now contain Ethoxyquin and/or BHT, both of which should be avoided as possible carcinogens. I've also seen "poultry by product meal" listed in the ingredients- "poultry" can be anything from chickens and turkeys to pigeons and crows. By product meal is a very low quality product- basically whatever humans won't eat- beaks, heads, feet etc, NOT meat. If your hamster food contains meat, make sure it is not a byproduct and it is species specific (chicken meal is great, chicken by product meal is not great, poultry byproduct meal is bad and "meat and bone meal" is definitely a no go)"

I have quoted this from the hamster website. I can't really make head or tail of it, so am perhaps hoping for someone a little more savvy about this to explain it? I wonder if it is an issue, or nothing to worry about really?
I feed charlie on Harry Hamster, but have thrown away the packaging so if anybody has the Harry Hamster packaging, perhaps read it and post what it says?

Sorry for the long post, and if it was confusing

The best idea would be to contact the manufacturer directly (Supreme) with your concerns and asking for a full explanation and assurances regarding the product. This is better than quoting from other websites. Let us know when you hear back from them. It may be that the ingredients are quite safe and that the poultry used is a perfectly acceptable source.
Once you have the information you can make a decision yourself on whether you want to continue to feed it :)
There are frequently scares posted on various foods and mixes for all types of animals and your most reliable source of information is the manufacturer.

The contents list on the website mentions nothing at all about poultry linford so it sounds already that the information on the other site was very inaccurate!

I did notice that. I wonder maybe if they were exaggerating! I have looked at other websites ingredients list for it too, and none mention these dangerous ingredients. Next time I will check the packaging anyway.
Sorry for causing this when there was no real problem!!

As far as I`m aware, Harry Hamster has never had this substance contained within it, but the only way to be sure is to e-mail the company Supreme. They manufacture it for the US under Hazel Hamster aswell so perhaps the two are different?

I stopped using Harry Hamster ages ago and switched to Burgess Supahamster Hamster Harvest (syrian mix) as I feel it offers more variety.

I was looking on the Supreme website the other day and I'm pretty sure they stated categorically that the recipe hadn't changed. I wondered why and this explains it. Will see if I can find the page again and link it.

ETA It wasn't on the Supreme site but here:
http://www.vetuk.co.uk/hamster-rat-chinchilla-hamster-rat-chinchilla-food-c-671_672/supreme-harry-hamster-700g-p-2110
and also in the Product Description here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Supreme-Harry-Hamster-Food-700g/dp/B003A8FS88
so presumably lifted straight from the packaging blurb.

I read the ingredients on my packs - which arrived a few days ago - and it doesn't mention these at all - in fact i cant find a mention of meat at all, which is why i went for this mix, as i supplement.
