I was just thinking last night, would feeding treats through cage bars encourage bar chewing? It might give the message that good tasty things come from there?

We feed treats through the bars with some of our dwarf hams and its never been a problem.
We don't feed the syrians through the bars now though, and those are the only two we've got who ever bar chewed. (For more than 10 seconds anyway - Scruff trying bar chewing and deciding she didn't like it doesn't really count by me.)

I never feed treats through the bars but that's just because I like to give them to Belle myself ...

I do it through the bars quite often. Usually only if I know I don't really have time to play. I feel like a tease if I open up the cage and then close it quickly.

I was told that feeding any small furry through the bars could encourage them to bite fingers more often as they see anything coming through the bars as food. So I generally dont feed through the bars just in case.

Thanks guys. She's started taking food from me now, so I'll continue to pop the odd bit through her bars with no worries :D
