I recently introduced Denzel to you all yesterday, however I have a question.

The pet shop had him listed as a Male Syrian, but due to his colour and long skirt I cannot tell myself, is there an easier way to see? He is still a little jumpy with the handling.

Thanks

you've answered your own question there. it's definately a male as females don't have a long skirt

Thanks, I'm learning new stuff daily.

I have owned 4 other Syrian hamsters but have never really found out what sort they are or what colour.

Yes, as Bunsey said longhaired males have a very long skirt of fur round their back end which longhaired females don't. They tend to be more fluffy all over, but sometimes have small 'tufts'!

Thought you may like a better pic of him, he is quite a character and is now used to me handling him.

He is gorgeous, but I'm not sure if he actually is a he, as I can't see the 'skirt' of a male from that photo.

Here is our Longhaired male, Napoleon, modelling his skirt!

Male hamsters normally have very noticable testicles at their rear under the tail, especially when they feel hot!  You can see how to tell the difference between male and female hamsters here:

souffle seemed to think it would grow to a full skirt, but check out the picture under my introduction post and let meknow what you think.

I see he does have a small skirt, which if he is a young hammy will likely grow bigger. I think the only way to know for sure is to get a look at his underside!

Regardless of whether he is a he or a she he is gorgeous and I'm sure will be well loved!

Well I have come to the conclusion that Denzel is a girl and have now had to rename her Denzelle.

There are definately no male bits and the skirt has not materialised.

She also smells a lot mre.

well Im sure she is happy with you calling her a girl - especially if she always knew she was one!
Denzelle is a lovely name for a lovely girlie hamster - it sounds very exotic
