I know some HC members keep cats and hamsters in their homes. Recently I have gotten my own office with a door that latches well to keep the hamster cages in safely. So since my OH is really a cat person and has wanted one since before we got together I took him to our local animal shelter to meet the kitties :)

When we were there I fell in love with all of them (it's kinda what I do with furry animals  ) But he really took to a 6 month old female with medium length tortoiseshell colored fur. She seems really frisky and affectionate. Her name's Mira.

We filled out an application to adopt her, we will hear back in 1-7 days...Hopefully we get approved!!! I'm so excited about her \\:D/ I've never owned my own cat!

Here she is for anyone who's curious

Thanks!
Have you had any troubles keeping your hamsters safe and happy with a cat in the home? I know the obvious dangers, but I don't want to limit my hamsters playtime due to a new pet. Want to maintain their quality of life, you know?

Their cages are in the spare bedroom so we keep the door closed all the time. When the hamsters are out we supervise VERY carefully. I've recently bought all 3 hamsters an exercise ball each so they can run around more safely. One of the cats, Cerys, shows no interest in the hams and runs away when they come near. The other one, Bob-Bobs, is curious about them and jumps on the cages whenever he can. It hasn't been a problem in the past as the hams are all in tanks and don't seem concerned at all but I've just transferred Bear to a barred cage and Bob-Bobs has been lifting his paws to the bars so I am being even more careful than always.

We plan to keep the hamsters behind closed doors unless carefully supervised by both of us. Only 1 of our 4 hams currently use an exercise ball. My robos don't like them, and my syrian isn't crazy for it. She prefers to just be out with us.

I have a mild cat allergy anyway, so we plan to always keep our new cat out of my office. Hopefully my little hams will be safe
