Hi all,

This year I decided to make my friends sock creatures. It has been a few years since I have sewn and as I got further through discovered which worked and which didn't. I know know how to embroider faces and I will start experimenting with different animals soon (hamsters, dogs, own)! I also tried crafting with felt. All went down well at christmas and I feel proud I made them..still ahve a few more to make!

Ham Cat is very happy in the lounge. It was entertaining try to work out what part was from what part of the sock :D.

Oh my, they are truly impressive! They are the kind of thing that would cost a fortune in those fancy "shabby chic" decorating kind of shops! Are they just made out of a pair of socks, no other fabric? I want to make one! Ham cat looks like he is making an ironic statement, wearing hamster pyjamas, lol

They sell these (though I must say yours look about ten times better) on Greenwich market for about £10 a pop! I love the ratty :) I have a collection of ratty cuddlys now massing on the top of the boys cage though sadly one did get pulled through and had his tail bitten off... ironically by Crashdown who lost half his tail to an incident like that irl.

What do you stuff them with? Teddy stuffing or more socks?

Thanks all, I was super nervous giving them to people..they came with a little tag around their neck -

"I once was a sock believe it or not
I may not be perfect but I hope you will
Love me"

All made form a pair of socks, stuffed from an old pillow...i really was trying to economise!!! Gamina one may be adopting you soon for all your generosity to the ratty boys xxxx

He would take pride of place on the cage although he would have to watch his tail!

These are amazing! you are very talented :) do they take you long to make? and did you do them from a template or just however you wanted? :)

Keep up the good work! :D

Thanks all,

I do them all by hand, I don't see how doing them on the machine would reduce much time, the simplest cats took around 2 hours to make the body then extra for embroidering and picking which buttons for eyes! I found a template for a cat and adapted it. The bunny took me around 7 hours because I couldn't get the ears and head right and then doing th face and bow! I've got the hang of the cats now so 2-3 hours for them...i wanted to make everyone them for christmas but if you count them up you'll see thats a lot of hours! I still have one to do for my mum and a HC member who doesn't post much..,.oh this was my first one i made...i learnt not to use long socks, took me ages!!

I don't like sock monkeys which is what made me go in search of other ones! I did make an "adult" one for a friend which im sure some of you can guess but the picture will not be posted lol

Oh i thought it was English, lol, will have to find out. :D

Amethyst_ice
01-10-2012, 03:49 AM
hahaha there probably is an english one, just all the ones i see linked are in dollars!

StarlightSerenity
01-10-2012, 03:51 AM
You can sell all over the world in Etsy :) There are a lot of English sellers on there (including me when I get my act together!). It's default currency is dollars but you can change all that when you have an account (something both sellers and buyers do).

There is a totally english version - Folksy. Folksy doesn't seem to have as many people on it though, I'm not sure if it's a better option.

oh right, thanks, may consider it at some point, im still bit embarrassed about my messy handstitching :/

BrainGirl
01-10-2012, 07:54 AM
Messy handstitching is not a problem; that's what people want these days! Heck, you can get sewing machines now that can "reproduce" hand stitching. They're marketed to quilters and the stitching is still fairly neat but the point is that they don't look like they came out of a machine. People want the hand-made look!

eek i would totaly buy one if you started selling them, theyre so cute in a weird way haha xD

Amethyst_ice
01-10-2012, 03:27 PM
:) thanks, i didn't know that about the machines, crazy!!! After March I may do some, id want to start with HC'ers who would be more forgiving if they took a bit longer than promised than scary 1 star leaving ebayers!

hahhaaha socks can be picked up cheaply, most those were on a 3 for 2 deal at a shop under a fiver :) its just the time to make them that "costs" :) x
