I was on another hamster forum looking in the cage section (i love seeing other peoples cages :) and this forum didn't have many people from Europe on it. Anyway i saw some of the cages and i was so shocked. Alot of them were tiny cages for syrians (and i mean TINY) with just the basics. some cages just had a wheel, bed/house, food bowl and water bowl. and most of the rest were rotastaks or the cages with the patforms that have spacings between the bars and the wheels were the same. most of the people who owned these cages were from america. im not critacising americans, as i know there are a few on this forum and spoil ther hammys :) but i was wondering, is it hard to get good cages in america? i dont blame the people on that forum for it, as they probably have no other option/cage?
Don't get me wrong, i wasnt bad mouthing people and dont mean to offend, but i couldnt help but wonder about the quality of the cages there? the home made ones were far better than the shop bought ones.

I believe that in different countries there is a large lack in suitable cages for hamsters but still a bin cage would be better than nothing :/
I have been debating about building a big cage just because it sounds like a lovely and exciting task to keep me busy ^_^

From what members on here from the usa have said it is really hard to get decent size cages over there which is a real shame.
And I suppose if shops are selling cages that are small people will just think they are ok to use as a pet shop is selling them.

A lot of the cage manufacturers that supply the UK and the rest of Europe don't sell to the US, so while we have many different brands to choose from (Ferplast, Savic, Hagen, etc.), it's a lot more difficult in the US. :( The best option is normally a bin cage.

Have you ever checked out German hamster forums (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hamsterboard.de%2F)? I fear they must look at us in much the same way; their setups are amazing and make our efforts look a lot like the typically available US cages.

I would love to be able to read their posts in english! :)

It's a bit of a pain, but I right-click on a link I want to read and select 'Copy Link Location' and then paste that into Google Translate. Here's just their amazing Housing section (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hamsterboard.de%2Fboard.php%3Fb oardid%3D50%26sid%3D9c549e8b1130c4c7b1d143926d82bb aa) in English.

In North America it is very difficult to an actual cage that is of decent size, we make do with homemade cages, tanks and bin cages. Not having good 'hamster' cages is no excuse for not trying to use something else. ;)

Some people just honestly don't know better.
