Gooey Eyes

My male hamster has gooey eyes. Looks like pink eye would only in hamsters minus the pink. Its a yellow goop and the eyes are sort of squinted shut. It was not like this yesterday. Should I wash his face with a warm wash cloth? Eye drops? Any common or uncommon eye conditions like this?
