I know its different here, but i just want to mention it :)
In Germany for dwrafs its : 5 cm diameter and for syrians 7 diameter xD It's because we are worried about a hamster with full cheeks may become stuck.

5 cm sounds fine for tube size so they don't get stuck. If you're thinking about what can they escape from, I use 0.5mm mesh on bin cages. I have used 1cm bar spacing cages but only with larger chunkier adult chinese.
