Sticks?

Its been really windy lately (and wet too!) so alot of sticks have fallen from trees. I have a big tree, i think its a blossom tree, has pink flowers in spring? My whole garden is covered in sticks! Could i use some in Rubys cage, she loves climbing alot, she even tries to climb over her pringles tube! If it is safe, should i boil water then pour it over them, or give them a good scrub with water and disinfectant and then bake them?

I know fruit tree sticks are safe, i also would like to find out the answer to this, we have a blossom tree :)

Does anyone know? I dont want to leave them lying too long but i dont want to use them if they are not safe... and does anyone know if they are safe for gerbils too? My cousin wants some for her gerbils too :)
