Suggestions for website
I think it would be really helpful to have a section on here which lists safe and unsafe wood. I also think a section of safe and unsafe foods would be helpful.
I do not know if this would be possible and I know somebody knowledgeable would have to write it.

Re: Suggestions for website
Did you have a look through the relevant sections on the Forum to see if there's anything on here already?
Could be an interesting one because what's considered safe and unsafe can vary from person to person, forum to forum or country to country.

I have and could not find anything but I am not very good at finding things so I may have missed it.
You make a good point about things being different depending on country to country.

Re: Suggestions for website
I've just randomly read through a list of safe and unsafe foods online. It stated that lettuce is safe and apples need to be peeled. As far as i know romaine lettuce is suitable but iceberg is not and apple skin is a good source of fibre. Ours had a bit of organic apple with the skin on this week.
It also said that legumes like beans and peas should be avoided. I knew about the beans but not about peas and have always given them peas.
According to the internet i'm getting it all wrong then.......

Re: Suggestions for website
Food safety is a tricky one because of just how much varies within even a group of type of foods like legumes for example.
Beans in general do need cooking but there are specific legumes safe to consume raw, but that's generally not too hard to find information for with a quick search even if you have to rely on sources for parrots for example. That doesn't mean they can never be given of course, they just have to be properly prepared. Some foods are only safe cooked and never should be given raw like potato!
I think the apple skin being unsafe thing could've came from pesticide usage and other contamination concerns. As long as you rinse your produce it's not typically a problem, but you should be doing that for all produce even for yourself including organic due to food borne illness etc.
As good as it would be to have a convenient & official pinned safe and unsafe food list, I think it would realisitically take too much work plus there's always room for things to change so then it would be more work for mods in terms of upkeep.

Re: Suggestions for website
I think it may be easier to compile ones own list of foods and woods that are NOT safe.

Re: Suggestions for website
I have found so much conflicting information about what is safe and not safe for hamsters. I wonder if this is due to them not being pets as long as other animals have been. For example, in wikipedia it says robos should not be fed pepper.
I have found these kinds of lists on other animal forums so wondered if it could be on here too.

Re: Suggestions for website
There is a list on the wiki site.
Safe and Unsafe Food and Plants - Hamster Central WIKI
But is quite old so as others have said thoughts on what is safe or unsafe may now have changed
