Default How to resize photos 2018

Below are ways to easily resize photos to embed within a forum post for different operating systems in 2018.

Tip of the year is courtesy of Razor! Regarding using paint on Windows.

For Windows

Right click on the photo you want to resize - select Edit - Paint opens. Click on "Resize" which is displayed at the top. Select "pixels" and 700 (which is about right for the forum page). Then click - File - save as - jpeg and you then have the option to rename the photo (eg file name resized) and save it where you want, which keeps your original photo intact.

For IOS or Android

I believe one of the best/easiest app to use is called "Image Size". Again it gives you the option to select "pixel" and it is the width that needs to be 700 ish (the length should change automatically when you select the width). It's free but has in-app purchases.

Embedding photos on the forum page

You can then embed the resized photo on the page and there is a separate sticky on this by April Pearl.

Updated this with screenshots to explain after some people having issues resizing.

So this example uses a photo direct from a phone plugged into a computer via usb (this would be the same for a camera plugged into a computer). So either copy and paste the photo you want from the phone/camera to the computer - or resize it direct from the phone computer.

Here I've selected a photo on my phone (opened up photos on phone via computer) and right clicked on the photo which opens a menu. Select "Edit" from the menu.

When you select edit - the photo opens up in "Paint" on Windows 10 computer - very large! As it's a full file size photo of about 4 or 5mb usually.

You then click on "Resize" at the top of the Paint menu and another window opens

On that window you can see there is either "percentage" (automatically selected) or "Pixels". Select Pixels. There are two boxes with current size in. Change the numbers in the top box to 650 (the numbers in the bottom box will then resize automatically). Then click on Ok. Your photo will be resized.

You then go to "File" (top left of the page) and a drop down menu appears - select "Save As". This is to save your resized photo without altering the original photo size (ie save a resized copy).

After moving the mouse over "save as" - move the mouse over to the right and select "jpeg" You want to save it as a jpeg.

Another Window then opens so you can choose where to save the photo.

Another Window then opens so you can choose where to save the resized photo

Select "Desktop" or "Pictures" on the left hand computer menu for the choice of where to save the picture (or you can select a particular folder in Pictures eg).

The file name of the photo is already typed in - but you can change that file name to whatever you want. So instead of IMG xxxx you could call it "Resized cage photo). Or leave it as IMG xxx and add "Resized" on the end. So you know it's your resized photo.

Then click "Save" (bottom right of window). And close Paint. Go to the location you saved the photo (eg the desktop or pictures folder and the photo will be there. The original photo will stil be full size and on your phone/camera or in its original location. The resized photo will be where you saved it to - as a copy. You'll know which is the resized version easily if you add the word "resized" to the title before saving it!

It sounds complicated but isn't - once you've done it a few times you can resize photos to fit the forum in seconds (or a minute or two). Then just upload the photo to the forum so they show in your message box (see thread on how to Embed photos).
