Why bother creating a separate forum then?

In my experience debate forums just end up with people getting agitated and angry with each other. It's very hard to determine someone's tone of voice from what they are typing if you know what I mean.

One of the nice things about this forum is that people can and do have respectful discussions, it doesn't suit everyone but no forum ever could

It might be a matter of experience then

For example, in my experience - debate sections generally allow a greater level of mature and rational discussion regarding any given topic without flaming or people getting personally offended. Whereas if the same topic had been debated anywhere else in the forum, it would likely have ended poorly and ultimately caused the thread to be removed or locked as the participants don't enter the thread with the same expectations and understandings.

But that can be solved by posting it's a debate subject

Cage Sizes Debate Thread

I'm sure I must be missing something here

You know when you have one of those moments where you think, hang on is this me?

And then you have a really good think over whats been said again, but you come up with the same answer as before

It's not that that's not a recognised option, it would certainly be superior to the current situation I imagine, but would it be enough?

The benefit of a completely different section is that it's quite defined, and as mentioned previously it potentially allows a slightly amended set of rules for posting and moderation.

If adding 'Debate' to a thread topic would change members attitudes when entering a thread and perhaps adjust their responses to be more appropriate then I would definitely be happy with that.

I think it would as you would know clicking on the link saying debate it will be a debate & not someone asking for cage size help.

It gives you the clear option of joining in or not.

You could also type the word Debate in bold type so it's clearly seen by everyone within the title of the thread

The problem with that is the Forum Rules especially the section, "Respect". For example, disagreeing with someone, pointing out their error and stating an alternative could be seen as upsetting someone's feelings but is part and parcel of a debate. The benefit of a debating forum is that people should know what to expect when they enter it. That could be underlined, so to speak, by stating something like, "When you post you are inviting a response which may disagree with you so if you don't want a response, don't post."

People would know what to expect as the thread would be called a Debating thread.

As for the respect aspect of the rules you can disagree with people without upsetting people, you just need to be polite & careful with the way you word you replys
