Hello, syrian males often do have large noticeable testicles and yes heat can make them "saggier". If your hamster is long haired then you may not have noticed as much.

A female will have noticeable lines of nipples.

Regarding your children, why did they want a female? Female syrians go into heat every few days and can be harder to please, often needing a larger set up than males.

But whatever sex, gender shouldnt matter and you should communicate that to your children that it is still the same hamster they have loved.
