That's good news anyway. When the colder weather comes, they can hide away a lot more and sleep longer - like they're preparing for colder weather. And the darker nights affect them too I think.

Are you sure he's not just eating from his hoard? He could have just changed his hoarding habits. When they empty the food bowl, they don't eat much of it - they hoard most of it. And tend to eat from their hoards. Although the 5g weight loss doesn't sound good. But they can start to get leaner as they get older.

I have a "nightcam" so I can review what my hamsters have been doing at night while I'm asleep. If you could see his night time activities you might find he's perfectly active, and drinking, and grooming etc.

Just keep an eye on him. I'd suggest getting him out like this every night - even waking him a bit earlier to get him out (then you might see him stretch and yawn and see his teeth).
It's been a night and he hasn't eaten or drank anything at all. He hasn't been to his sand bath. He used to love sand baths, but it only means that he pees and poops in his nest. He hasn't eaten anything either. I woke him up and gave him salad. He doesn't even eat worms anymore, which is a huge red flag for me.

I am still hoping everything is fine.

I don't think he's grooming himself, since his coat is a bit of a mess. All he does is sleep and eat salad in his cage.

I'll wake him up earlier today to see if he's yawning. I don't have a nightcam, but maybe I can record him somehow with my iPad to see how he's doing.

That's a relief that he was running around yesterday, but he immediately came back onto my hand as soon as he could. He usually doesn't want to come back immediately. At least then his eyes were wide open.

How did your hamster's eyes look like when he was dying? Were they half closed as well?
