I know that most people say that bigger is better but i personally don't agree with that.
I wouldn't consider a non barred cage myself because i think its good for the hamster to be able to smell their surroundings, interact with their humans and have the option to walk out of a big front door by themselves. I also think that it would be too drastic a change for a hamster who is used to a barred cage.
Of course, this is only my opinion.
I know of someone who adjusted the front door of a pawhut to a door that slides up and down to remove it allowing the hamster to walk in and out. I think they also replaced the front panel with mesh to allow for interaction.
Hi Ria, thank you so much for your thoughts on this, it’s got me thinking that as long as I give Hams his free roaming time each day then keeping him in his current cage is going to be ok.

He mostly comes out for around 30-40mins and as you’ve mentioned above, he’ll sit by the door for this ready to hop out, which is so cute. His roam time depends on how active he is, after 30 mins, he’ll sometimes just sit and keeps looking up towards his cage and that’s when I know he’s thinking it’s time to go home.

Changing his cage to another barred variety would only add a little extra space and he already seems more than comfortable doing all his hamstering activities in this one and as much I think the glass varieties look amazing, swapping him now would be a bit of a surprise for him. I’m going to stick with what we have unless he shows me any signs of being unhappy with it and then I’ll go from there
