It can get very upsetting if you think about it and see a lot of it - as with any pet welfare issues (the RSPCA adverts upset me as well).

I think it's a great idea to write something for your local newspaper. You'll need a few good photos to go with it. Sometimes they can be picking about printing articles, but the free papers are usually happy to have contributions (and are widely distributed). Or you can ask your local paid for paper to interview you (they write the piece and take the photos then).
