Yes the Barney's top door is a good size. Although I find the big front door on the plaza easier for reaching in to replace and spot clean things. If you ever do have to remove the top from the Barney it's a nightmare! It's huge (deeper than most cages by almost 2").
Amity - depends on the hamster. The Barney was good for gregarious Newt who would just sit at one of the small doors waiting to come out. But for shy Pickle it didn't work at all - very hard to get him out - hence I swapped cages for him.
