Mesh isn't too difficult to work with honestly once you know what to do, but it can definitely lead to injury if you're not careful(and frustration, headache, etc). Personally I gave up halfway through a DIY rat cage between the physical pain of mesh and zip ties, but it's a lot easier when you only have to make something smaller like a lid. The zip ties were honestly much worse to me especially since I was having to use so many while trying to avoid using any sort of tool to tighten them!
I would definitely add a layer of wood to cover the exposed mesh edges though just to be safe with a DIY lid. I remember hearing about precut mesh sheets in the UK too and that would make things even less difficult. You really don't have to be too creative or even necessarily good at DIY things to pull off a decent functional lid.
