It would not create a comfortable and safe environment for a hamster to live in.

If you don't have tools or basic DIY skills you can get a made to measure lid through etsy or go to a B&Q if you live in the UK. They could cut a piece of plywood to the required size and cut out panels for meshing as well. All you need to do then is get a staple gun and mesh to staple it on from the outside.
