There are other issues caused by lack of ventilation like overheating of the tank in hot weather and condensation caused by the hamster's urine which can lead to mould and harmful bacteria.
It would not create a comfortable and safe environment for a hamster to live in.
If you don't have tools or basic DIY skills you can get a made to measure lid through etsy or go to a B&Q if you live in the UK. They could cut a piece of plywood to the required size and cut out panels for meshing as well. All you need to do then is get a staple gun and mesh to staple it on from the outside.
