Default Re: Wheels for Robo hamsters

They can fly out of larger wheels when they're not used to them, but once they're used to a wheel they don't do that It needs to be at least 6 to 7" but I also use an 8 or 9" wheel for our robo. Just make sure there's plenty of soft substrate around the wheel area in case he flies out at first!

I prefer them screwed to the bars so they're stable, rather than sat on the substrate. I have the 9" open rodipet one which screws to the bars, but it's a bit expensive. And there are plenty of other options. This one actually has a height adjustable stand and can fit onto a pedestal which sits under the substrate to keep it stable. But I ended up using it just screwed to the bars instead of on the stand (the stand and pedestal are a good option for a tank style cage though). It's a bit of a luxury wheel - cork lined for their feet, silent and spins well. No rim so easy to get in and out (which doesn't really matter till they're older).

Depends on your set up

But there are plenty of other 8" or 9" wheels. There's a video of a robo running in that 9" wheel on the top link That's how they run in it when they're used to it - ie stay at the bottom and stop easily. Initially they run so fast they go right round the top! With centrifugal force. But they can do that in any wheel till they get used to it.

If you have space in the cage for both, they love a 6-7" flying saucer wheel as well. But the upright wheel takes priority so if there's not room for both, just stick with the upright wheel. Our last robo had both and used both of them.
