I had the p@h xl a couple of times, once for my first hamster and then for a foster. I don't get on with that cage at all because every time i wanted to do some spot cleaning i had to take the wire top off.
Elderly Syrians tend to pee more so may need a little more cleaning. I'd move him in the Grosvenor now using all his things and setting it up as close to the original set up as possible. I'd place the plastic hut he sleeps in next to the house like an outhouse and he may well move into the main house. I think that he'll be fine with a move because all his things and smells will be there.
