Most of our Syrians backfill the doors to their houses. Sometimes there's a mountain of substrate in front of their houses and they have to dig their way out again.
The Robo doesn't because he's so nosey and pokes his nose out of his house soon as i touch or move something inside his tank.
Our dwarf doesn't backfill either but again, she's a nosey one who comes out during the day. Maybe she wants to know who's about.
I think some hamsters do that to keep things like light, noise, humans etc out when they want to sleep.
My OH once stupidly poked his finger through Rodney's barricaded door to tell him that his porridge was served. Of course he got bitten by a very tame and friendly Syrian.
So, yes, you are spot on. It does mean "Keep Out!"
