Send it back for a "clean" new one. If a bit of sand leaks out..... so what. Yon can also cover the bottom with some brown craft paper (paper bag) if that becomes necessary.

If you cannot do that, I'd use a sander to remove what I could not cut off with a razor.
I bought this new. All the sand boxes come with instructions that they can be sealed with aquarium sealant. I had to use that or any sand would come through it. Thank you for the tips. I tried a razor but I think it was too blunt. Luckily a wallpaper scrapper worked.
