I am so sorry to hear about Roc and sorry I didn't see the updates earlier, because had something similar with our last Syrian. I learned a lot about eye problems and they are quite serious in terms of suffering and treatment options. The standard treatment is to remove the eye to prevent pain and suffering - especially as once it protrudes they are already blind in that eye. But that depends on age and fitness. I had a similar dilemma in that not having the eye removed would mean recurring infection, but having it removed was too big a surgery in an older hamster and with the possibility there may be a tumour behind the eye.
You have helped him on his way to prevent further suffering and he's playing free now over the rainbow bridge - free from pain.
I am very sorry for your loss - it's hard. I think eye problems are some of the hardest to deal with.
