Do you have a hall or landing? I use ours with the doors closed and stairs blocked off but also push a towel under the gap between door and carpet where needed. Makes an ideal freeroaming area with a blanket, lots of big toys, wheel and cardboard boxes down.

I have hamster proofed the spare room as well by literally checking every inch of it for holes in the floor boards, wallsetc and check it from time to time. Cables are off the ground, sockets switched off and i watch them while enjoying out of cage time.

I can't recommend a playpen because our lot doesn't like them but i do know that the wire panel ones are a waste of money.
