yes, hamsters can get covid, they have been used for testing - there are scientific research papers on it.
whether this was the case here you would have to have testing done, other than that you will never know, but it is a possibility.
I know of one hamster rescue in america that lost a few hamsters all at once and they were getting tested for covid, but I don't know if they got the results back yet.
