I think that you need to buy a handheld magnifying glass. Opticians sell them.

When i fluff up the white Kaytee clean and cozy i can see white particles in the air before they settle so it could be that. They have given me a fright before when landing on the water bowl so i got the magnifying glass out to ensure they weren't alive.
