Default Re: Bugs in enclosure

Mites can only be seen under a microscope and live on a hamster causing itching and sore skin which requires a visit to the vet.

A while ago i heard book lice mentioned when someone described small bugs in and around the water bowl so i'd try and look those up to see if that's the ones present in your hamster's cage.

Fruit flies aren't much of a problem and can be removed by removing the source. One of our hamsters had buried a piece of cucumber causing fruit flies so i cleaned out the affected area which sorted the issue.

It is advisable to freeze all food and treats and things like herbs, hay etc for a week. I've done this for a while now but still had to do a cage deep clean the other day when i saw a pantry moth inside a hamster's cage.
