There was only 1 photo that was clear enough to see the body sections and id also hazard a guess they are biscuit beetles. They are brown reddish which would account for when you saw red when you squished and attracted to dry food, dark and warm areas.

As said, id get totally new bag of food, do full cage clean and get rid of the wooden items. A cardboard box with holes is fine for a house.

Id also thoroughly hoover the room he is in and do it several times a week.

They shouldn't be harmful to either of you
