The really useful boxes are easier to cut than the cheaper ones and its important to get a box with a flat lid.
I'd look for an Alaska cage for a Syrian. Not sure they are in stock on Zooplus but they come up on Gumtree.

that's true about the cost adding up! i used to have a big alaska cage for my last hamster, but it was somewhat expensive. haven't really looked on places like gumtree for secondhand ones tbh
