A decent sized bin cage isn't a cheap option anyway. The box, mesh, cable ties, sandpaper and optional decorative tape soon adds up. Then of course one needs the tools to convert one into a hamster home.
The really useful boxes are easier to cut than the cheaper ones and its important to get a box with a flat lid.

I'd look for an Alaska cage for a Syrian. Not sure they are in stock on Zooplus but they come up on Gumtree.
