Mashed banana might be easier yes. Main thing is he gets the fully dose daily so just a tiny amount of food that will all get eaten. If he's so unwell he's not really interested in food you may need to just syringe it in, in which case runny honey will do and the medicine less likely to get spat out again. But make sure his head isn't back so it can't go in his lungs - put the syringe in from the side of his mouth.
