Default Re: Hamster wheels in UK?

Hi Bel. Her cage looks very nice. Hamsters do love flying saucers . The feeling amongst a number of owners is that they can run slightly bent on a saucer if they don’t run on it properly. To run on it properly they run at the bottom end of the wheel and keep their back straight. Some hamsters run as if trying to always run up the side and then they run slightly curved. So generally the view is an upright wheel is better as a main wheel but your saucer is a good size for your hamster and it’s up to you x. Sometimes advice can come across as criticism. Dwarf hamsters also love saucers - our Robo had both an upright wheel and a saucer and used both.

My suggestion would be keep an eye on how she is running in the wheel - if she is running properly on it then it may be fine. At some point you may decide to get an upright wheel (the trixie 28cm is cheap and easily available on Amazon) and use the flying saucer in a playpen or for out of cage time or to keep as an emergency wheel (which is what I do).

People on here are of course all very pro hamster welfare but no-one intended to upset you I am sure xxx. And ultimately we do sometimes make decisions based on individual circumstances. It isn’t good to put fleece in a hamster cage either but I do have a fleece hammock in my hamster‘a cage purely because I know he doesn’t chew it (and is a bit lazy generally!).

To go back to the OP’s question - wodent wheels haven’t been made for some time. So hard to come by and there are now better wheels.

The trixie 28cm plastic is about £9 on Amazon and very popular. Not silent but usually fairly quiet. The Silent runner 12” is a fantastic wheel - silent, safe and sturdy - but expensive at £25 ish. It can also be bar mounted with special plates (costing another £5!). It is also a very long lasting wheel so pays for itself after a couple of hamsters! It’s completely silent if that is a priority.

The other silent wheel is the trixie wood 28cm wheel - that may be harder to get hold of at the moment - usually sold by Zooplus for about £9 but needs painting with plastikote waterproof pet safe paint so it’s wipe clean. That’s another £4 for the paint. Those are sold on Amazon as well but usually at a higher cost.

If you need a cheap wheel quickly you can’t go wrong with the 28cm plastic trixie wheel. Looks a bit like a wodent wheel but easier to clean. I went off wodent wheels anyway due to the fiddly stand and they don’t always spin as well as some.

Trixie wheel. It’s £12 at the moment

12” silent runner - in stock at the sugar glider shop. This is tall on its stand (35cm) so mage sure it would fit

28cm wood trixie wheel - out of stock at Zooplus - available on Amazon but double the price at £25!

If you’re going to spend £25 I would get the silent runner - if it fits. It will last longer.
