Treats didn't really have much effect when i was taming my Syrians. They much prefered freedom and still do.

I took them out of their cages in a hamster taxi like a jug and sat with them in a hamster proof area, put them on my lap to explore and they soon realized that there was a world outside their cages they wanted to explore. Step by step i took them through taming exercises and their "reward" was an "escape" when they jumped off my lap or legs to have a run around.

I've never really done the hand in the cage with a treat taming thing with my Syrians. They walk away from food soon as their cage door opens.
