The benefits are that a) they know the hamster exists, b) what species (and thus what diseases, genetic or otherwise, they might get), c) their age (for age-related issues), d) other health-related things like weight, previous issues, etc.

It essentially boils down to making things as quick as possible to get the hamster in to the vet's office and looked at, and any issues diagnosed (or, to have the hamster quickly PTS if it becomes necessary to help them on their way). Hamsters, despite being surprisingly hardy creatures, can have their health turn for the worst rapidly, so speed in getting them help is essential.

I just have mine registered to my nearby Companion Care vets, although given recent history I've been considering looking elsewhere. How many you register your animals to is up to you; consider things like distance, costs, and how good they are at treating 'exotic' animals.
