Hamsters are burrowers and won't suffocate in substrate, so don't worry.

All our hamsters have a bowl and a bottle. It is a good idea to have two water sources in case one fails. Some hamsters prefer a bottle over a bowl, in fact our Robo does but most use both. Only one of our seven favours the bowl over the bottle.

I put a glass marble or pebble, large enough not to be pouchable in the bottom of a water bowl to stop a very small hamster from falling into it.
