If i thought for one minute that one of my hamsters was dying but suffering, i would take them to the vet immediately to have them put to sleep.

To me, squeaking and wheezing indicates that he may be struggling.

I can't advise you what to do because that is not my place but i can tell you what i would do.

It is very hard and i really feel for you but as the saying goes, better a day too early than a day too late.
