He’s been slowly gaining weight since then (139g when I last checked), but I’ve noticed he’s lost a lot of energy. I’ve noticed him fall asleep mid groom or on his wheel, which I’ve never seen him do before. He’s only 8 months old, which feels really early for old age to be setting in. He’s otherwise very happy and healthy, still exploring his cage, as well as eating and drinking normally. Could it just be that he’s started to properly settle in, or should I contact a vet?

I would suggest to visit a vet, just to be sure. You cannot be sure now why your hamster has lost his energy. It can be nothing, however, it is better to have him checked than to feel sorry after the illness develops. I do not think anyone in here on forum can help you better than a vet specialised in rodents. I would also first call to the vet just to see, if he or she wants to for example collect the hamsters poop or urine.
